About The Handmaiden
When “The Handmaiden” premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, critics voiced what the director’s fans wanted to hear: Park Chan-wook’s best film since Oldboy.
The film begins with a glimpse of heavy rain lashes. A group of parade soldiers are passing by. A number of women are standing under a shelter nearby, holding a baby in their arms. It is the 1930s, The time when Korea was under Japanese occupation. Everything looks bad. The first character we meet is Sook-hee. An innocent young girl holding a child in her arms takes one of her wives, takes her bag, and walks in the rain to the car at the end of the street. A not-so-good future seems to await him.
“The Handmaiden” is narrated in three parts. The first and second parts are a reflection of each other and tell a similar story from two different perspectives. The third part combines the two angles of vision and, by adding another, directs the story to the summary.
